Can we just talk about Queen Bey for sec? This year alone, our majesty managed to release one of the best (solid) R&B albums in idk how many years, she headlined Glastonbury (first woman to ever do so,) shereleased8videos, 8! Iknow, 8! Oh and she giving birth any minute, day now to the Beyssiah. Flawless Queen being flawless. Not much else needs to be said here.
Without a doubt this would be higher on my list had it been a shorter album, but thats what I love about it! With every listen, I catch more and more tidbits I had never heard before. Even entire songs for that matter that never caught my attention. The qt that is Anthony Gonzalez really created a magnum opus here. Ive been a fan of M83 for many years now and the growth of the synthpop sounds, the ambient undertones, electronic-dream-pop orgasm. I too say this is M83’s best work so far. Saw them live in November and my mind was fucking BLOWN. Im also pretty stoked theyre on the Ultra lineup (though surprising, honestly) I get to see them again in March, hopefully with some awesome production (and not during the day.)
Nomi Ruiz, Andrew Raposo and Morgan Wiley departed Hercules and Love Affair’s live act and went on to create Jessica 6. A prefect response to the new nu-disco craze more people should have jumped on. Im allll about nu disco/funk/deep house anything and everything about it. I love anything I can get down to and this album definitely helped. Nomi’s voice is raw and real and I couldnt get enough of it when she sang on Hercules and Love Affair. The album does an amazing job of making me dance (White Horse, Fun Girl and Prisoner of Love, above,) with equally raw and real songs like Not Anymore.
